Upcoming Changes in the Transportation Industry

It is no secret that the transportation industry is the backbone of our economy. With more than 70% of the freight being delivered by trucks, it is no surprise that so many sectors and fields of commerce depend on it to receive necessary goods and products.

When it comes to the development of the industry, the main changes that include sustainable business ideas have only started to appear recently. As the transportation business expands and continues to grow, so does its negative influence on the environment.

In the United States, transportation and drayage are one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. If no changes are made, these gasses will continue warming our planet. The industry is experiencing a series of changes that will improve its influence on the earth, which will likely continue for the next ten years.

The Usage of Modern Technology

Integrating modern technology into transportation industry jobs creates more functionality and better optimization. As an example, a truck driver will have maximized efficiency when managing the fleet, improved navigation systems, and lower risk hazards.

Automatic transmissions, conditioners to control the temperature, and noise level regulators are a few of the many advanced equipments available for drivers. However, one of the most important technologies is the tracker, which will enable drivers to operate if they encounter any unknown routes and guarantee the safety of truck drivers. In the event that a truck breaks down, the trackers will also be able to locate the closest authorized repair facility.

Further, trucks will be designed to include a mobile office with all the necessary equipment such as a printer, scanner, and of course, Internet access.

The good thing is these technologies don’t take much time to adapt and get acquainted with, so learning how to operate them will not be an issue for drivers.

Transition to EVs

Unlike traditional vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs) are powered by electricity and don’t use diesel or gasoline to power their engines, which makes them one of the most convenient sustainable business practices. Electric trucks are already popular today, with many companies coming up with their models and quickly making their way up to the market.

EV charger

In 2020, nearly 6% of automobiles sold were EVs. According to the recent transportation industry news, New York and California are planning to ban the sales of gas and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035. It is predicted that by 2030, the amount of EVs in global commerce will grow by 22%.

However, there are supply and demand challenges we’re facing on a global scale. In order to meet net-zero requirements, we would need millions of electric cars to be manufactured over the next few decades. Now, contrary to popular belief, the problem isn’t necessarily the amount of lithium (key EV battery component) required for these vehicles, but the actual production of it. In other words, lithium reserves may be sufficient, but the capacity to produce may not.

The growing demand for lithium-ion batteries has created quite a predicament for manufacturers who are already running out of supply. As global leaders in the industry try to come up with solutions for this shortage, we’ll have to wait and see if production will catch up with increasing demands.

As transportation industry companies shift towards sustainability, some alternatives to electric vehicles are renewable diesel and renewable natural gas.

In order to accelerate the switch from gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles to cleaner energy sources, like natural gas, agencies like ADMD, NGVA, ARB, and HVIP have established funding programs that allow reducing the percentage of the initial capital expense of a new filling station. Through these programs, commercial fuel suppliers and managers of fleets can establish natural gas fuelling stations that are easily accessible to the public and for truck drivers as well.

Additionally, a new regulation in the industry stated that older diesel trucks (specifically diesel trucks with engines made prior to 2010), which are not environmentally friendly, cannot provide such services as port trucking. Many companies who were unable to switch from old diesel trucks to more sustainable electric vehicles, had to leave the trucking business. Consequently, this led to a 33% reduction of trucks in the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports.

That is why it is so important to choose a trucking company that follows a sustainable business model because only in that way can you have a reliable business partner or a secure truck-driving job. Moreover, trucking companies inclining towards eco-friendly changes offer their employees better career opportunities and professional growth.
